If you live in Burwood and need specialist care for gum disease, gum recession, bone loss or dental implants, the Periodontics & Dental Implant Specialist Centre provides dedicated periodontal and implant care from our Hawthorn East clinic.

Our periodontists work with conditions affecting the gums and bone that support your teeth. We also provide the surgical stages of dental implant treatment, including implant placement and bone or gum grafting when required.

Our clinic is located at 57 Harold Street, Hawthorn East, VIC 3123. We regularly welcome patients from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, including Burwood, who require care beyond routine general dentistry.

You do not need a referral to make an appointment. Call us on (03) 9813 1866 to book your first consultation.

What Is a Periodontist, and When Do You Need One?

A periodontist is a dentist who has completed several additional years of specialist training focused entirely on the gums and the bone that anchors your teeth. General dentists are well placed to handle routine care and early-stage gum problems, but once gum disease has progressed, or once a tooth needs replacing with an implant, the level of diagnostic and surgical precision required usually calls for a specialist.

In practical terms, that means we’re the ones your dentist is likely to refer you to (though a referral isn’t required) if you have: bone loss visible on an X-ray, gum recession that’s progressing rather than stable, a tooth that’s become loose without an obvious cause, or if you’re considering a dental implant and need someone to assess whether your bone and gum health can support one.

Where bone volume is insufficient — something we see reasonably often in patients who’ve been missing a tooth for a long time — procedures like bone grafting can rebuild a stable base before implant placement goes ahead.

Dental Implants: What to Know Before You Start

An implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth, onto which your dentist later fits a crown. The part we’re responsible for — and the part that matters most for how long the result lasts — is the surgical placement itself. Get that wrong, and no amount of good crown work fixes it later.

We place Roxolid® implants, which are made from a titanium-zirconium alloy rather than pure titanium. In practice this means a smaller implant can be used in tighter spaces without sacrificing strength — relevant for patients with less bone volume to work with, which is more common than people expect once a tooth has been missing for a year or more.

A few things that tend to surprise first-time implant patients:

  • The surgical appointment itself is usually shorter than people expect — often under an hour for a single implant.
  • Most of the total timeline is healing, not treatment. Osseointegration (the implant fusing to the bone) typically takes three to six months before the final crown can go on.
  • You’ll generally need two providers involved — us for the implant, and your regular dentist (or ours) for the crown. If you don’t already have a Melbourne-based dentist, we can point you toward one close to Burwood.

A Note for Deakin Patients & International Students

If you’re a student or staff member at Deakin’s Burwood campus, two things are worth knowing upfront. First, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) generally provides limited or no coverage for specialist periodontal treatment or implants — we’ll give you an itemised quote so you can check it against your own policy before deciding anything. Second, if you’re only in Australia for a fixed period, it’s worth telling us that at your consultation, since implant treatment takes a few months to complete and we can plan around your timeline. Our specialist team also includes Chinese and Korean speaking periodontists.

When Gum Symptoms Need a Specialist

Most people don’t know when a gum issue has crossed the line from “something to mention at your next check-up” to “get this looked at properly.” A rough guide is:

  • Bleeding when you brush: Occasional bleeding after a hard brush is common. Bleeding that happens most days, unprompted, is worth assessing.
  • Gums that look like they’re pulling back: Teeth appearing longer than they used to, or sensitivity at the gumline, often means recession has already started.
  • Any looseness in a tooth: Adult teeth shouldn’t move. Any perceptible mobility warrants an X-ray to check the supporting bone.
  • Bad breath that persists despite good hygiene: This is sometimes dismissed as a lifestyle issue when it’s actually a sign of infection below the gumline.

None of these guarantee a serious problem, but they’re the signs we’d rather see early than late.

Getting to Us from Burwood

Our clinic is in Hawthorn East, just off Burke Road — around 5–6km from central Burwood, which typically works out to a 10–15 minute drive depending on traffic on Toorak Road or Burwood Highway.

Typical route: Head west along Burwood Highway or Toorak Road toward Camberwell Junction, then continue toward Burke Road / Hawthorn East. If you’re travelling without a car, the 75 tram (via Camberwell) and connecting bus routes are the most straightforward public transport option — we’re happy to talk you through timing when you book if that’s how you’re getting to us.

Patients also travel to us from Camberwell, Surrey Hills, Box Hill South, Ashwood, Burwood East, Mount Waverley and Glen Iris — all of which sit within a similar radius of the clinic.

What Does It Actually Cost?

We’d rather give you a realistic range than a marketing number. A single implant in Melbourne, including the surgical placement (our part) but before the final crown (your dentist’s part), typically lands somewhere between $3,000 and $7,000+, depending on:

  • Whether bone grafting is needed first
  • How many implants you need, and whether they’re being placed in one visit or staged
  • The complexity of the site — a front tooth with aesthetic requirements is a different job to a molar

We don’t finalise pricing until we’ve actually assessed your gums and taken imaging — a quote given without seeing your bone structure first isn’t a real quote. You’ll walk out of your first consultation with an itemised breakdown, not a ballpark. Every patient is different, so the cost of treatment will depend on your individual needs. Call us on (03) 9813 1866 to discuss your situation and get a clearer idea of the costs involved.

Working Alongside Your Local Dentist

You don’t need a referral to book with us directly, but if you already have a general dentist near Burwood or Box Hill, we’re set up to work alongside them rather than in place of them. We’ll send treatment summaries back to your dentist after each visit, and for implant cases specifically, we handle the surgical placement while your own dentist typically completes the crown — so continuity of care isn’t lost just because you’ve come to a specialist.

FAQs for Burwood Patients

Whereabouts is the clinic in relation to Burwood?

We’re based in Hawthorn East, roughly a 10–15 minute drive from Burwood, VIC 3125 — home to Deakin University’s Burwood campus.

My dentist near Burwood suggested I see a specialist — what happens next?

You can book directly with us, referral or not. If your dentist has already flagged something, bring along any X-rays or notes they’ve given you — it helps us get straight into the assessment rather than starting from scratch.

Does OSHC or private health cover periodontal treatment or implants?

Generally, only partially at best for either. OSHC (relevant if you’re a Deakin student) and standard extras cover both tend to fall short of the full cost of specialist periodontal work or implants. We’ll give you an itemised quote at your consultation so you can check it against your own policy before deciding anything.

Do I need a referral to be seen?

No. You can book directly. A referral from your GP or dentist isn’t required, though we’re happy to liaise with your regular dentist if you have one.

How long before I’d have a finished tooth if I start now?

Typically three to six months from placement to final crown, occasionally longer if bone grafting is needed first. This is worth factoring in if you’re on a fixed-term visa or course and want treatment completed before you leave.

Can I get a cost estimate without committing to treatment?

Yes. Your first consultation is an assessment, not a commitment — you’ll leave with a clear, itemised quote and no obligation to proceed immediately.
