What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. In order to become a periodontist, dental school graduates must complete an additional three years of training, during which time they learn numerous advance techniques for treating gum disease and placing dental implants. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.

Why choose a Periodontist?

Your dentist can and does provide routine dental care in order to maintain the health of your oral conditions. However, if you are suffering from periodontitis or symptoms of gum disease, you will likely be referred to a gum specialist, also known as periodontist, who is specially trained to provide more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Earlier detection of gum disease will give you a better chance of healing from the disease quicker and easier and also reduce the risk of developing irreversible damage due to the effects of gum disease.

Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing or root surface debridement (in which the infected surface of the root is thoroughly cleaned). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are only specialist whom haven been trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants.
